“--and said, ‘damn! Look at that fat kid go!’” It seemed so wrong, but the three teenagers listening intently to the story Pence told, could not help but laugh at the misfortune of their friend. The exaggerated arm gestures, the sight of his eyes practically bugging out of his head, and the way he spoke each word just made the whole thing hilarious.
“Aw, Pence. All that for a couple ice creams?” Hayner reached up, rubbing the tears forming in the corners of his eyes away with the back of his hand. Even though they were brought upon by his laughter, he would not allow the soft droplets to roll down his cheeks, “You’re a real friend, thanks man.”
“I really taught them a harsh lesson too.” Pence bit down, lapping up every little bit of salty-sweetness left on the wooden stick. After all that hard work he had to do to acquire it, he was not about to waste a single speck, even if that meant he had to eat the stick itself, “Ya shouldn’t judge someone by the way they look! I may be pudgy, but I can run pretty fast!”
Hayner snorted, leaning forward to get a better look at the boy who made the outrageous claim, “Wanna have a race to prove that? I’ll take you on right now!”
“Pfft, yeah… RIGHT.” The boy waved his hand, holding his head up high. He knew Hayner would totally kick his ass when it came to a race. He could talk big, but when it came down to it, there was no way he could put any proof behind the words he spoke. Hey, he was allowed to embellish the truth every once in a while too! “Tomorrow it’s Rox’s turn to get the snacks. I’ve had enough exercise for at least a month!” Oooh boy, his calves were going to be sore…
“Already got it covered.” Roxas smiled, his arms still holding his aching stomach. It had been quite some time since he had a good laugh like that. It sure felt good… even if it was at the expense of one of his best friends. “I have to walk Mrs. Hoppkins dogs tomorrow.”
“AAAH!” Hayner rubbed his nose, one eyebrow quirked in question, “All sixteen of them?”
“Yuuuup.” Roxas sighed heavily, his shoulders drooping forward slightly. It wasn’t the most pleasant of jobs, but… no one else would hire a sixteen-year-old for temporary work. There was only one week left of summer vacation, if they wanted munny, odd jobs like this one was the best they were going to get.
“You’ll smell nice tomorrow.” Hayner smirked, his own shoulders shaking with silent laughter.
Roxas shot him a glare, but couldn’t really respond… his best friend was right, after all.
“Ugh, I didn’t notice how late it was getting!” Olette suddenly interjected, glancing down at the thin watch wrapped around her wrist, “I have to get home! ‘member you guys promised you would come shopping with me tomorrow! And then we REALLY need to sit down and work on that independent study assignment! Don’t want to go back to classes without it…”
All three boys turned to look at their female friend, their faces rather blank but also holding pouty undertones that only Olette would be able to catch. She gave them the “look” and the three immediately began nodding, mumbling something incomprehensible under their breaths.
“See ya then!” She jumped up, bounding off out of the usual spot.
“I better get going too. Mom’s making roast beef!” If the smile on Pence’s face stretched any further, it would become disconnected from is face entirely and take on a life of its own.
“Uh, Pence.” Roxas raised a hand, scratching the back of his head, “…didn’t you just eat four ice cream bars?”
“Hello, appetizer! See ya!” He wobbled off. Nothing would be able to stop him from getting to the food awaiting him.
“Good luck tomorrow, Roxas. Let’s plan a big end-of-summer trip, just the four of us! It just seems kinda wrong we haven’t done much of anything this season…” Hayner stood to his own feet, stretching his arms high above his head.
“Later.” Roxas nodded in his direction, watching him disappear around the corner of the local potion shop. He sighed, leaning back against the concrete wall, his arms behind his head. He didn’t want to go home just yet. Even though there perpetual twilight in this town, near the evening hours, the air was cool… and it was quiet since everyone in the town had retired to their own personal living spaces.
This was the best time of day.
