Being in a castle where he was constantly subjected to the unknown around every turn, shook his confidence. He was finding it harder and harder to discern where true intentions lie when forced to listen to an earful of a speak that could possibly be deceptive. The other side of the portal would have to reveal Twilight Town, he was sure of it. What reason would Eyepatch have to play petty games now that he was back under their constant supervision?
Although, he'd like his voice to be void of doubt, he knew the man had an odd ability to expose anything he attempted to suppress. He continued speaking to him in a condescending manner, treating him worse than he would a typical child. Here, he knew he would be viewed as little more than a household pet then a boy with a mind of his own.
“I don’t need them with me all the time. I’m capable of taking care of myself.” He hesitated no longer in submerging himself in the stream of shadow, walking the endless corridor between the fabrics of space until he managed to locate its end... through some miracle.
A dimness met his eyes then, brought upon by a sun that had not yet dipped below the horizon line. He gasped despite himself, eyes filled with the golden aura surrounding him. Twilight Town! His town exactly as he left it!
Down by the corner of the street was the husky ice cream vendor calling out the names of each appetizing flavor he had in stock to each person passing by. He often gave him a bar of sea salt in exchange for running a few errands for him here and there. On occasion, he’d give a free bar away for no reason other than being one of his best customers. No doubt his friends constant patronage kept him in business all year round.
Roxas was even happy to see the grumpy face of Mrs. Caine, whose hardened features scared most people away from her store. A shame, since she had the best items available in the whole area.
Thoughts of the Organization and Demyx, Axel and the man who permitted him this visit, faded from mind. They were no longer of any concern. Actually, he almost believed he’d been having one of those disturbing dreams again.
Until... he heard them.
“Aw, Pence. All that for a couple ice creams?” Hayner reached up, rubbing the tears forming in the corners of his eyes away with the back of his hand. Even though they were brought upon by his laughter, he would not allow the soft droplets to roll down his cheeks, “You’re a real friend, thanks man.” It seemed so wrong, but the three teenagers listening intently to the story Pence told, could not help but laugh at the misfortune of their friend. The exaggerated arm gestures, the sight of his eyes practically bugging out of his head, and the simple way he spoke each word made the whole thing hilarious.
“I really taught them a harsh lesson too.” Pence bit down, lapping up every little bit of salty-sweetness left on the wooden stick. After all that hard work he had to do to acquire it, he was not about to waste a single speck, even if that meant he had to eat the stick itself, “Ya shouldn’t judge someone by the way they look! I may be pudgy, but I can run pretty fast!”
Hayner snorted, leaning forward to get a better look at the boy who made the outrageous claim, “Wanna have a race to prove that? I’ll take you on right now!”
“Pfft, yeah… RIGHT.” The boy waved his hand, holding his head up high. He knew Hayner would totally kick his ass when it came to a race. He could talk big, but when it came down to it, there was no way he could put any proof behind the words he spoke. Hey, he was allowed to embellish the truth every once in a while too! “Tomorrow it’s YOUR turn to get the snacks. I‘ve had enough summer jobs for a lifetime!” Oooh boy, his calves were going to be sore…
“Already got it covered.” It had been quite some time since he had a good laugh like that. It sure felt good… even if it was at the expense of one of his best friends. “I have to walk Mrs. Hoppkins dogs tomorrow.”
“AAAH!” Pence rubbed his nose, one eyebrow quirked in question, “All sixteen of them?”
“Yuuuup.” Hayner sighed heavily, his shoulders drooping forward slightly. It wasn’t the most pleasant of jobs, but… no one else would hire a sixteen-year-old for temporary work. There was only one week left of summer vacation, odd jobs were the only option if they wanted munny.
“You’ll smell nice tomorrow.” Pence smirked, his own shoulders shaking with silent laughter.
Hayner shot him a glare, but couldn’t really respond… his best friend was right, after all.
“Ugh, I didn’t notice how late it was getting!” Olette suddenly interjected, glancing down at the thin watch wrapped around her wrist, “I have to get home! ‘member you guys promised you would come shopping with me tomorrow! And then we REALLY need to sit down and work on that independent study assignment! Don’t want to go back to classes without it…”
Both boys turned to look at their female friend, their faces rather blank but also holding pouty undertones that only Olette would be able to catch. She gave them the “look” and they immediately began nodding, mumbling something incomprehensible under their breaths.
“See ya then!” She jumped up, bounding off out of the alleyway.
“I better get going too. Mom’s making roast beef!” If the smile on Pence’s face stretched any further, it would become disconnected from his face entirely and take on a life of its own.
Roxas watched as the three dispersed, going to their respective homes in their own separate directions. Although each happily moved past him, not once did they make eye contact. His stomach dropped, pooling at the tips of his toes. He felt physically sick.
It seemed there were truths behind what these people had told him.

Sora took a deep breath of fresh air as he stepped outside. He stretched, yawning a little, as Donald and Goofy caught up. They were grumbling a little.
"Come on, Sora, we just woke up!" Donald fumed, stamping his foot.
"Yeah, Gawrsh!" Goofy agreed. "There's no need to move so fast."
Sora chuckled, embarassed. "Sorry, guys. I'm just eager to ckecking this place out."
As soon as Sora had met up with Donald and Goofy he had taken off running. He climbed the stairs out of what had seemed a sort of basement to find himself wandering the empty halls of a strange mansion-like building. After his bizarre meeting with Namine, Sora had felt that the walls were pressing in on him a little too closely; he hurried out of there as fast as he could.
Now, as the bright sun shifted over the horizon, Sora took a look at his surroundings. He seemed to be in a sort of crumbling courtyard, with broken pillars on all sides. He leaned against one of these and looked back at his companions.
"So, guys, where do you think we are?" he asked.
Goofy looked around with dopey eyes, and Donald blubbered with impatience. "Sora, I can't remember anything from before we fell asleep."
Goofy nodded. "Me, niether. A-hyuck! What about you, Sora?"
Sora thought for a minute. He hadn't told the two about his meeting with Namine, and he had no intention to. "No, I don't remember. But... I think..." He hesitated. "I think this world's called Twilight Town."
He tried to avoid the other's gaze as he said this, looking instead at the bright sunset--or was it a sunrise? The other two said nothing for a moment. Then...
"Well, Sora, should we look around?" Donald asked, for once not stamping his foot. "We need to find Riku and the King!"
Sora jumped back to his senses. "Oh, yeah! Right, let's take a look around."

"Hah! Good for you! Take charge of yourself!"
That's precisely the response he'd been waiting to hear. It meant the munchkin viewed them all with the same contempt. He didn't trust any one of them above the other. Eh, it'd been nice to keep him neutral but cautiously obedient toward all parties involved this time around. Personally, he wasn't going to give him enough free time to become chummy with Demyx OR Axel. Their little band of Nobodies needed to get him back on track, gathering hearts as quickly as humanly possible now that DiZ was hot on their tails. 'Specially with Namine on his side. Little witch. They should have rid themselves of her presence long ago.
Pah, whatever. No use fretting over past mistakes. They managed to swipe Roxas right out of the old coots homemade wonderland, dragging him back to where the truly belonged. DiZzy would not be able to pull a fast one on them a SECOND time. If he thought otherwise, he was even more delusional and pathetic than he thought.
Xigbar followed Roxas into the portal with an extra hop in his step. The Organization had already won. Now it was only a matter of how long it took for their ex-mentor to accept defeat. Oh, he'd accept it hastily if they ever found him. It was SO like him to hide somewhere in the shadows, potentially waiting to stab them in the dark. Heh, coward. At any rate, that wasn't what was most important right now.
Number two stood aside while Roxas attempted to come to terms with the reality of his tragic situation. The progress happened the way he intended it to, no, BETTER than he intended! The absolutely devastated look on the kids face was classic. Aaaand it was about to get worse, as he was going to prove in a matter of seconds.
He honed his senses into a world typically unseen, a place where shadow lived and breathed. An inky darkness began to seep through the cracks in the pavement below his feet, revealing the odd silhouette of a physical being with two yellow eyes bugging out of an imperfect skull. They were Heartless. Hundreds of them. Some even spilling over the edge of a nearby cliff. Xiggy didn’t find it in their best interest to gently reminding Roxas of his place. Nah, he’d never get back into the swing of things if they didn’t shove him face first into chaos. Which was pretty much what he intended to do.
Light footsteps patted down on the walkway, coming ever closer to a group of unfortunate humans who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The creatures that were once very human moved as quickly as their flimsy limbs would allow. Their need to devour the human essence only became more intense with their master overlooking their progress. Xiggy walked among them, carefully stepping forth with feather-like grace. He was there merely as a catalyst, feeding the mindless lackeys with the darkness they required to function.

Sora set off, Donald and Goofy padding clumsily behind him. He exited the Mansion's courtyard hasitly, the crumbling pillars giving him the willies. He set off through a thick growth of forest, the sunlight barely able to pass the dense leaves. He was careful not to trip over any odd roots.
A second later he had frozen in place. One of the shadows cast by the trees was a little too dark... leaning forward, Sora squinted at the blurry shadow. A second later it had leapt away from him, froglike and bug-eyed.
"Heartless!" Sora yelled. Donald squawked with shock and Goofy a-hyucked.
"What are they doing here?" said Donald angrily, watching the shadow squirm away from them.
Sora shook his head in confusion. Hadn't the Heartless disappeared when he closed the door? "I don't know, but it's not going to be here for long," he said, his Keyblade popping into existance.
Sora dashed after the Heartless, following it into a rather large town. There he suddenly lost track; the town was full of bustling people. He weaved through them, feeling slightly self-conscience in his too-small clothes.
Finally he saw it again, disappearing into a side alley. It seemed to be joining with several other Heartless, all wriggling out of the shadows. "In here!" he called over his shoulder. Donald and Goofy followed him into the alley.
There Sora had to stop; he had run straight into a writhing wall of the black shadows. They were everywhere, and they weren't alone. On the other side of the alley, barely visible past the writhing darkness, there seemed to be a small group of people--two boys, and what seemed like a girl. They looked defensless.
"Come on!" Sora yelled, charging into the wall of black. He raised his blade and swung with all his might.

The heartless leapt to overwhelm all those unfortunate enough to wander in their direct line of sight. They sucked the very quintessence out of broken bodies, transforming the victims into sacrifices to offer Kingdom Hearts. The screams of panicked civilians pierced the sky, a thunderous pounding of hundreds of feet in a full sprint adding to the deafening roar. The area felt like an inferno had been unleashed, and it many ways, it had.
A chilly heaviness settled in the blonde keybladers gut. For a moment, he could only stand and watch unbelieving as familiar faces twisted in terror, empty bodies crumbling to the ground. He watched as the creatures greedily lapped up the pink light it had stolen before it dissolved into thin air. They were taking everything and leaving nothing behind.... a horrific calamity.
These silently shocked actions blocked any further sound from reaching his sense of hearing. To his wearied mind, the air around him was quiet and still, almost stagnant in nature. He couldn't believe this was happening. Each breath he inhaled burned his lungs. It could have very well been his bodies reaction to the immense stress he faced, anxiety that he was becoming all too familiar with.
The streets were now totally stained in black, wiggling with newfound life... It seemed the shadows had taken on a mentality all their own, declaring mutiny against those they once loyally followed. Roxas' elbow locked, muscles pulling taunt when he saw a heartless creep up behind a helpless kid. He was prepared to throw his keyblade to stop it dead in its tracks. With impressive, PRECISE aim, Roxas launched the kingdom key, piercing the head of the writhing creature. It's deformed body burst into a thousand shards of data, all fluttering up toward the orange sky.
Moving forward more than a couple of inches at a time proved to be extremely difficult. Tactics were being used to throw off his balance, but he would not let these things get the better of him this time. This time, they were destroying place that was very important to him, he took it personally.
Roxas struck out in perfect sync with his twin no more than a couple of feet away from where he fought his damnedest. Together, they were actually able to make a dent in the beasts flooding the streets, releasing the hearts they guarded within themselves.

Sora's heart filled with dread that clutched at his throat. Battling the heartless was all too familar; he felt as though it would never end, a feeling strengthened by the swarm of blackness churning around him. His muscles screamed in protest as he swung and fought with his only weapon.
A second later, Sora felt his muscles sieze up; it was as though he hadn't fought for months. He felt limp for a second, but that was a second too long. A heartless knocked him off his feet, slashing with brutal ferocity for one so small. To Sora's horror there were three more behind it, all intent on the capture of his heart.
"Blizzard!" Donald screamed, blasting the first two into shadows. Sora lifted his acheing arm to block the last Heartless, tossing it toward the blonde boy. It eviscerated a second later, victim to the other keyblade.
Sora hardly had time to comprehend this new apparition, only a second to feel grateful that he seemed to be on their side. Yet there was something startingly familiar about him...
Sora raged forward into the swarming black, keyblade glowing brilliantly. He felt a familiar power well up inside him; he let the power flow through him, erupting into flame.
"Fire!" he called, the dancing tongues swirling like a tornado around him. The light created by the spell caused the darkness to creep away, torching the shadows into nothingness.

Xigbar was getting a wicked sense of duja veux watching his mindless followers rain down in copious quantities on the unsuspecting populace below. The air was FILLED with a symphony of terrified shrieking laced only by the occasional squawk of a passing bird, curious about the utter pandemonium erupting down in the human world.
Number Two’s face was set as if cast in stone, eyes hardened in their focus on the youngest Nobody in their brigade. No one would suspect that he was actually greatly amused at the chaos he caused. Hey, this kind of thing was what he LIVED for.
Considering the fact that the kids full potential was being hidden behind a false wall of data, he was doing extremely well. Really, there was only one problem he could see right off the bat: Roxas was so caught up in the moment, he wasn’t conserving his energy for enemies that may yet show themselves. These were creatures of the shadow realm, anything was possible. The Key of Destiny swiped furiously at the waves jumping to grapple his exposed limbs, stuck in a fit of rage. He was obviously very passionate about this town. Kind of a confusing sentiment, the two held no loyalty toward him.
The sky gave off a deeper crimson color then the normal warm glow of a town in perpetual twilight as released hearts left the bodies of their keepers. They fluttered away to join as one, absorbed by the beacon adorning the skies of the world between worlds. The brightness sorely contrasted the solemn mood saturating every inch of the place.
Hm. Xiggy began to realize that it actually WAS a little brighter there then it should have been. There were TWICE as many hearts floating around then Roxas was able to produce on a good day, when his brains were NOT scrambled. It didn’t take very long for him to discover the reason behind the influx of energy. Dangerously close to where Roxas was working stood Sora, having every bit of trouble as his Nobody counterpart.
“Hoooocrap!” When did THAT little munchkin get here? And how the hell did he miss it? Whew, maybe he was starting to go blind in the other eye...
This unified cooperation of keywielders was exactly what they wanted, though it was happening in a way he wouldn’t have expected. The scenario of the twins crossing paths played out in his mind many a day, never going quite as smoothly as it seemed to be now. Barring personal curiosities, he couldn’t allow them to meet each other. Not. Just. Yet. Eh, shame things had to end so prematurely... Oh well, couldn’t be helped.
Xigbar directed heartless to gather between the two, barricading them behind shadow and nothingness, while he sort of... sashayed over to where number thirteen fought. He roughly bumped Roxas into a portal with a sharp swing of his hips, wordlessly knocking him back into his room, while he stayed behind with the true key bearer. With a wave of his hand, the heartless were gone, leaving only him and Sora standing in the midst of panicked civilians.
“Well, well, look what we got here? You got big!”

Sora froze; The flood of Heartless was ebbing quickly, swirling back into a black vortex... but he was sure that wasn't his doing. They had been nearly helpless, why were the Heartless retreating now...?
Sora turned sharply, searching for that other keyblade wielder. He had been here a second ago... Sora's thoughts were interrupted by an odd voice.
"Well, well, look what we got here? You got big!"
A dark figure stood against the alley wall, arms crossed in a gesture of triumph. Sora's eyes raked over the bizarre person; he wore a dark cloak, but the hood was back. His face was scarred and weathered, and one of his eyes was covered by an eyepatch. The man had long black hair that flew behind him in the light breeze.
Something about the man's appearance or voice told Sora that the man wasn't an ally; he gripped his keyblade even tighter and took a firmer stance.
"Who--"
A sharp pain ripped through Sora's head; his vision blurred; Sora could only see a white room, figures in dark clothes, even a cloak on himself. He sat among them, and one of them had flaming red hair, and he was important to Sora... Then there was the silver-haired figure, his master... Sora eyed his comrades, his eyes resting on the eyepatched one...
Then Sora was back in the alley, his head throbbing. He swayed slightly on the spot as he faced the cloaked figure.
"You're... Xigbar?"

Was there something wrong with this picture? Why should Number thirteen's heart be able to clearly recite his name like they were old acquaintances crossing paths for the first time in many years, while Roxas himself knew nothing of before? The twins were SERIOUSLY out of whack, which, really, was to be expected considering the circumstances surrounding the two of them.
"Xigbar, huh? That might be my name." He circled around the kid like a starved vulture, a big grin plastered across the rough features of his face. Although he would have chosen to delay this inevitable meeting if he had a preference, it couldn't be helped. It was quite obvious he was just amused about the whole encounter now. Sora looked so positively befuddled, he couldn't help but laugh at his misery.
Either DiZzy failed to run a thorough investigation into rectifying the plight the boy suffered within Marluxia’s Castle Oblivion, or something else was afoot here. He had a sneaking suspicion it was the latter. Roxas and Sora were connected, as light and darkness should be. When one side faltered, so too did the other. It was the way of balance. Neither would return to their old selves until that top heavy equilibrium settled. Or WOULD they? Hmmmmm, interesting question.
Maybe he should experiment? >D
“Hey, you’re lookin’ kind of pale... Maybe you should sit down, take a load off your feet.” Xigbar boldly stepped forth, lazily throwing an arm around the kids shoulder, “It's good to see you again! I see your fashion sense hasn't change since the last time we met... though you're body certain has grown. HEHE. Hey, buddy...." He leaned forward, whispering softly into his ear, ".... you didn't happen to see an old dude wrapped up in heavy red cloaks 'round here, did you? Goes by the name of DiZ?"

Sora felt a shudder run down his back as the man threw his arm around him. His mind felt blank; what had he just been saying again...? And who was this guy anyway?
Confusion washed over him, and he felt the now familiar pang in his head. The only thing he knew was that he was NOT comfortable this close to an enemy. Sora fiercely shook off the man's arm, stepping away deliberately.
"Hey, pal, I don't know who you are, but get away from me!" Sora said, raising his keyblade as he firmly plated his feet.
But that name... "DiZ?" Sora asked. "I have no idea who you're talking about. What's your problem, anyway?"
